What is Hosting?
Hosting (web hosting) is the service that allows a website to exist on the internet.
In simple terms
If your website is a house ????,
hosting is the land where that house is built.
How it works
- A website is made of files (images, text, code)
- These files are stored on a server (a powerful computer that is always on)
- When someone visits your site, the server sends those files to their browser
Relation to DNS
- The domain name (e.g.
mysite.com) is the name - DNS servers find where the website is located
- Hosting is where the website actually lives
So:
- DNS → finds the address
- Hosting → stores the content
Types of hosting (simple)
- Shared hosting → many websites on one server (cheap)
- VPS (Virtual Private Server) → more private space
- Dedicated server → one full server just for you
- Cloud hosting → uses multiple servers for better performance
Why it’s important
Without hosting:
- your website isn’t online
- no one can access it
